|

If you're in the mood for touring Europe, why not consider the Liguria region of northern Italy, known as the Italian Riviera? This thin strip of land is located in the Ligurian Sea, near Monaco and the Riviera. While Liguria is by no means undiscovered, its people are much lower than the next. This article explores the Cinque Terre. Read the other articles in this series: eastern Liguria, western Liguria and Genoa, the capital and largest city in Liguria.

Cinque Terre are five coastal villages in eastern Liguria become a World Heritage site by UNESCO. The most popular trail, Sentiero Azzuro, runs along the water. It is 8 miles (13 kilometers) long and takes about five hours. Trains of the villages, not a hero and spoil your trip.

Monterosso al Mare, population 1,500, is the largest village. Stone steps from the village center link to the port and waterfront. Monterosso al Mare is bedecked hills surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. Thursday is market day exhibition of local arts and crafts, food and wine. Be sure to see the twelfth century Church of San Francisco, built in Gothic style of Liguria, with beautiful black and white marble.

Vernazza is the only natural port of the five villages. As the wealthiest people of their architecture is more elaborate. View the castle of the Doria, the watch towers and the Romanesque sanctuary of Our Lady of Reggio.

Corniglia, a farming village, is the most remote village. That has no coastline. How to get through the negotiation of 337 steps in 33 flights of stairs. Be sure to see the fourteenth century Gothic-style Church of San Pedro Liguria.

Manarola is the center of the local wine and olive oil industry. What a festival of colors: the houses are pastel, water is turquoise and the rock upon which rests the city is black. Do not miss the love that unites road Riomaggiore Manarola. You see some of the world's most exciting landscape. This mile-long road was cut from a rock overlooking the sea.

Riomaggiore is the least charming of the five villages. The fourteenth century parish church of Saint John the Baptist dominates the town. Be sure to see the ruins of an XV-XVI century castle.

Ligurian pesto claims that his is the best in the world. It is made with basil, olive oil, pine nuts, garlic and Parmesan cheese. Do not break a real Liguria heart, not in a blender. Cinque Terre / Cinque Terre Sciacchetrà (DOC) is made from a grape variety. These wines are much less spectacular than the vineyards of the stone carved thousands of years ago.
